On September 26th 2018 Massapequa Elks Lodge 2162 held a Drug Awareness Seminar in partnership with YES Community Counsel and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition.  There were over 65 attendees which included Elk Members, Members of the Massapequa community as well as neighboring towns. Massapequa Elks Exalted ruler Pete LaRosa opened the seminar speaking about the Elks Commitment to our community and the need to raise awareness about the Opioid epidemic. Drug Awareness Chairman of the South East District Brian Steckler spoke on the importance of bringing the Elks and community together with Elk programs such as the Red Ribbon Week.  Adrienne LoPresti, LCSW R Associate Director at YES Community Council center delivered an engaging presentation on opioid abuse, overdose, and prevention. She also provided Narcan training for all in attendance. Each attendee was given a Narcan kit to take home.  Narcan Nasal Spray counteracts the life-threatening effects of an opioid overdose.  Steve Monty Elk Member and Director of Security at St. Joseph Hospital spoke about the opioid epidemic and the amount of overdose patients that are seen in the emergency room in his hospital. The Program was very educational and informative.
